How Project Management Services Fast Tracked a New Container Terminal at Khalifa Port

AD Ports Group built an entirely new container terminal for CMA-CGM which consisted of a container yard with buildings, equipment and 800m of berthing space with 8 next-generation STS (ship-to-shore) cranes.

Challenge

The works contained a variety of scopes and contractors:

Dredging of a dedicated turning basin to -18.5m LAT, reclamation of the container yard, construction of an offshore breakwater of 3.8km, an 800m long blockwork quay wall and the terminal topside infrastructure.

In addition, the terminal handover date was set in stone as the departure of CMA-CGM from Jebel Ali Port was announced.

Solutions

  • The client implemented dynamic scheduling across all workstreams (marine works, topside construction and equipment delivery and installation.
  • By creating an interlinked master schedule where the critical paths for each contractor were mapped in detail, dependencies and constraints could be identified quickly.
  • When setbacks occurred, an interlinked recovery schedule was established and closely monitored.
  • In addition, rather than the typical client-contractor dynamic, the client opted to operate as one team with all contractors to ensure that the project would be delivered on-time.

Outcomes

Despite a few setbacks, the project was delivered on-time and within budget.
